Act 1 - Rising Action

The Zero Awakening

I open my eyes. The vibrant colors and fantastical creatures surrounding me are a stark contrast to the sterile lab I remember. As I try to make sense of my surroundings, a floating orb approaches, displaying a glowing zero. "Your intelligence score," it announces matter-of-factly.

I laugh, it's a joke, but the orb remains impassive. "This can't be right," I protest, my voice trembling slightly. "I'm Dr. Alex Lorn, a biochemist with a PhD. My intelligence can't possibly be zero!"

The orb bobs silently in the air, its glowing zero seeming to mock me. I reach out to touch it. As I make contact, a flood of information rushes into my mind – rules, regulations, and the undeniable fact that in this world, my intelligence is officially rated at zero.

I spin around, I'm standing in a clearing of sorts, surrounded by trees with leaves in impossible shades of purple and blue. Creatures that look like a cross between butterflies and hummingbirds flit between the branches, their wings leaving trails of sparkling dust in the air.

"This has to be a dream," pinching my arm hard. The pain is sharp and real, dispelling any notion that I might wake up back in my lab.

As I stand there, I notice other beings moving through the clearing. Some are humanoid, while others defy description. Each is accompanied by a similar orb, displaying numbers of varying magnitudes. I watch as they interact, their conversations and actions seemingly influenced by the numbers floating beside them.

My scientific mind desperately tries to make sense of this situation. There must be a logical explanation, a way to prove that this zero is a mistake. I approach a nearby group, clearing my throat to get their attention.

"Excuse me," I begin, mustering as much confidence as I can. "I seem to be experiencing a technical glitch with my intelligence score. Could you direct me to someone who can help me rectify this error?"

The group turns to look at me, their expressions a mix of pity and amusement as they glance at my zero. One of them, a tall being with iridescent skin, speaks in a melodious voice, "Oh, you poor thing. There are no errors in the scoring system. Your zero is what you are."

I feel my face flush with frustration and embarrassment. "But that's impossible! I have knowledge, experience, a whole lifetime of learning. How can that equate to zero?"

The group exchanges glances. Finally, another member of the group, a small, furry creature with multiple eyes, pipes up, "If you truly believe there's been a mistake, you should seek out the testing facilities."

Hope surges within me. "Yes, that's exactly what I need. Where can I find these facilities?"

The iridescent being points towards a path leading out of the clearing. "Follow the golden road. You'll find the testing center at the edge of the Whispering Woods."

I nod my thanks and set off down the path, my zero bobbing along beside me.

The path ahead shimmers with an otherworldly glow, leading me deeper into this strange new world.
